Emerging Scholar Sami Barmada, MD, PhD, has invited Dena Dubal, MD, PhD, to speak at Michigan Medicine’s Neurology/Neuroscience seminar Friday, September 25 at Noon-1 pm via Zoom.
Dr. Dubal’s presentation is titled, “Mechanisms of Sex Bias in Alzheimer’s Disease: X Marks the Spot.”
Whether sex chromosomes contribute to sex difference in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is unknown. In AD, men die earlier, whereas women live longer. During aging and preclinical AD, men show more cognitive deficits than do women. We found that the X chromosome influences AD-related vulnerability. Engineering mice to harbor a second X chromosome conferred resilience in male and female mice, in part through Kdm6a, an X chromosome gene that escapes inactivation. In humans, variation in the KDM6A gene was associated with higher expression in the brain and less cognitive decline. These results support a protective role for the second X chromosome in counteracting AD vulnerability.
Dr. Dubal is an Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology at UCSF. Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms of aging, resilience, and neurodegenerative disease.
Dr. Barmada is the Angela Dobson Welch and Lyndon Welch Research Professor, Associate Professor of Neurology and in 2017 was named the Danto Family Foundation Emerging Scholar.
